We've tested this extensively, and here's what you should actually expect: Hyperoptic subscribers on a wired Ethernet connection typically hit 800–950 Mbps on a 1 Gbps plan. That's normal. If you're dropping significantly below that range, something's choking your connection—could be your router, your cable quality, or even how your equipment's positioned. We've seen it happen repeatedly, and it's fixable once you know what to look for.
Why Hyperoptic Speeds May Be Lower Than Expected
- WiFi bottleneck: Even a 1 Gbps connection will appear slower on WiFi. WiFi 5 (802.11ac) tops out around 400–600 Mbps in real-world conditions; WiFi 6 does better but still can't match wired performance.
- Router or ONT limitations: The optical network terminal (ONT) or router provided may limit maximum throughput. Check if it supports Gigabit Ethernet ports.
- Internal flat wiring: Some buildings use older internal cabling that limits speeds. Hyperoptic can check this with an engineer visit.
- Device limitations: Older laptops and computers may have 100 Mbps Ethernet ports rather than Gigabit, physically capping test results.
How to Run an Accurate Hyperoptic Speed Test
- Connect via Gigabit Ethernet cable directly to the Hyperoptic router
- Ensure your computer has a Gigabit Ethernet port (not 100 Mbps)
- Close all background apps and disable auto-updates
- Run 3–5 consecutive speed tests and average the results
- If results are well below plan speed on Ethernet, contact Hyperoptic support
